I have been absent in following the latest happening on the runway of late, however I made sure this seasons looks and trends from the Fashion Week S/S 18 collections were not going to be missed.
From all the runways, I can say flower power was a key element in almost all collections. The sporty look with various combinations is still a mainstay after 3 years, as many ready-to-wear looks were paired with trendy sneakers. The imposition of fantasy florals on the runways, shows there is a yearning for fantasy and romance to not only be injected back into our closets, but also our lives. Fashion trends always reflect what’s happening in society economically, socially and politically. Many runways also introduced a ball gown into their collections, just another affirmation for the need for a bit of romance and decadence in a time of economic and social unease.
New York’s runways pushed out strong lines and made women looks powerful. Even when dresses were light and whimsical, it still had a strong element in their styling or design.
London’s runways were fun. Richard Quin’s runway on floral fantasy was as extreme as it got, by having the entire model enveloped in floral prints. I kind of liked it. Strong shoulders and sharp edges ruled the London catwalks, but thankfully bold colour and prints were not far off.
Milan is always a favourite of mine. The runways never fail to show fantasy and fun. Italy is still one of the fashion capitals in Europe that continues to reign supreme in luxury textile development, so the runways are always a surprise.
Moschino makes my top 5 every year, and I loved My Little Pony prints. The collection also carried out the usual rebel fashion girl characteristic it’s known for, but there was more emphasis on fantasy with tutus bursting from below the leather.
Paris runways are still implementing sportswear into their collections. I found sportswear the most strongest on these runways. Ball gowns and evening wear pieces were also coming through, but paired with a good blazer to create a strong shoulder. Even Elie Saab has amazing work suits in his collection.
Many collections had opulent skirts and strong themes that still empowered women with a strong narrative. Take Valentino’s space travel theme with surreal elements added in and Chanel’s futuristic 60’s looks of a women in adventure and style.
For the boys
I’ve been busy so I have not had time to choose my favourites from the menswear collections from all the fashion weeks. Like the womenswear, sportswear still contuse to be a strong point. I’m still happy to see that colour and prints are still a force. I like it when a guy is confident to wear fun prints!
Pants are still focused on comfort with a tailored leg pipe paired with a good pair of sneakers.
Well, we can definitely confirm there is a strong desire for fantasy and romance. Unicorns are creatures that epitomise the world of fantasy. However, if your date pitches up in this….RUN 😉
