5 chilled stops to visit along the Overberg, Western Cape

The Overberg in the Western Cape has long been a popular route for a holiday or a short escape with locals. I know, I’ve been driving through these routes my whole life! The routes taken to the various little towns and holiday spots are scenic and aren’t more than 3 hours out of the city of Cape Town. I recently took a trip for a few days to the Overberg during spring, and decided to put together a list of 5 laid back stops you can check out for fun.

Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve

Last week, I was lucky enough to be part of the UNESCO World Heritage Road Trip to the Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve. It was a fun collaboration with the popular @instagram_sa, where 4 bloggers from various creative backgrounds came together and went on a road trip to celebrate South Africa’s Heritage Day on 24th September. The aim was to visit some of South Africa’s most beautiful and well-preserved conservation areas.

Kalk Bay Harbour

Kalk Bay harbour lies on the East Coast of the Cape Peninsula and lies in the False Bay Gulf. Growing up in Cape Town, Kalk Bay has always been a great post for watching seals, eating out and watching the fishermen come in with the catch of the day. The harbour walks also offer relaxing views of the ocean and a nice break away from the city. Let’s discover more about this small spot in the Cape.

The Cheetah Outreach

A few years ago, I went on a quick drive up to Stellenbosch and we spotted a cheetah sanctuary. We are lucky in South Africa. We get so much amazing opportunities to see wildlife, that most people only get to see on the National Geographic channels. Whether the animals are in their natural habitat or in sanctuaries, we are still lucky to be able to see them in plenty.

  • I have been informed that the Cheetah Outreach has moved to Somerset West, about 20 minutes from Stellenbosch. Please refer to the website (below) for more details)

The Rough Skins In Knysna

I love animals and nature. I also like taking photos of them! I promised myself a trip up South Africa’s beautiful Garden Route to see the elephants.

I originally planned to go to the ADDO Park, a real nature reserve on the borders between the Western and Eastern Cape, but a family member suggested the Knysna Elephant Park. The Knysna Elephant Park is a great experience, if you want to really interact with the elephants and if you are on a budget. You get to meet them, feed them, touch them, connect with them and take lots of cool close-up pics of them too.

The Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens

d04ac-dscn2607I love flowers. I like photographing them, drawing them and just being around
them….minus the bees and gross bugs of course.

Kirstenbosch Gardens in Cape Town has an awesome flower collection and it’s one of my fave places to go and relax on sunny days. Here is a small collection of my faves from my last visit. Now, I usually limit an album to my top fave 10, but they’re flowers….don’t be impossible!

The Matric Ball

prom
Too long ago

What is a Matric Ball? For those of you living outside of South Africa, it’s the Senior Prom. The final fancy party as we say farewell to out class mates of high school before we go our separate ways.

Girls go giddy, as they watch all the glam events and get the magazines to browse the best dressed lists of all the stars to see what they want their dress to look like. The Matric Ball is essentially the first major fashion event of our lives, even for those not into fashion! ^^ It also served as an escape from the reality of the pending final exams at the end of the year.
